If you posted a reel on Facebook and want to save it to your phone — or back it up to your computer — you have a few options. All of them use Facebook's own features. No third-party downloads needed.

This guide covers saving your own reels on iPhone, Android, and from desktop, with the exact steps for each.

Method 1: Save to Your Camera Roll via the Facebook App (iPhone & Android)

This is the fastest method. It works on both iOS and Android as long as the reel is one you personally posted.

Steps

  1. Open the Facebook app on your phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture or your name to go to your profile.
  3. Tap Reels below your bio to see all your posted reels (or scroll through your posts to find it).
  4. Tap the reel to open it in full-screen view.
  5. Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) — on iPhone this is usually in the top-right corner of the reel; on Android it may be at the bottom-right of the screen.
  6. Tap Save video.
  7. The reel saves to your camera roll (iPhone) or gallery (Android).

That's it. The video file will appear in your Photos or Gallery app.

If "Save video" is not showing

The most common reasons "Save video" doesn't appear:

  • You're viewing someone else's reel. The option only shows for reels you posted.
  • You're on the wrong account. Check that you're logged into the Facebook account that posted the reel.
  • The app needs an update. Outdated Facebook apps sometimes hide menu options. Update the app and try again.
  • The reel is on a Page, not your personal profile. Page reels are downloaded differently — see Method 3 below.

Method 2: Download Reels via Facebook DYI Export (Desktop or Mobile — Best for Bulk)

If you want all your reels in one go, or if the in-app save isn't working, Facebook's data export is the most reliable option.

Steps

  1. Go to facebook.com/dyi in a browser (works on desktop and mobile browser).
  2. Sign in if prompted.
  3. On the "Download your information" page, uncheck everything and check only Reels (also check Videos if you want those too).
  4. Set Date range to All time.
  5. Set Media quality to High.
  6. Click Request download.
  7. Wait for the confirmation email (usually a few minutes to a few hours).
  8. Click the download link in the email, then download the ZIP archive.
  9. Unzip the archive. Your reels are in the reels or videos folder as MP4 files.

Why this gives better quality

When you save via the app (Method 1), Facebook saves the streamed version — the compressed copy it created for playback. The DYI export gives you a version much closer to your original upload, which is typically higher resolution and better quality.

Method 3: Save Page Reels (If the Reel is on a Facebook Page)

Reels posted from a Facebook Page are separate from personal profile reels. If you admin the Page:

  1. Go to your Facebook Page.
  2. Find the reel post.
  3. Click the three-dot menu on the reel post.
  4. Select Download video (if visible).

Alternatively, run a Page-level DYI export:

  1. Go to Page SettingsYour Facebook informationDownload your information.
  2. Select Videos/Reels, set quality to High, request the download.

Method 4: Use the Facebook Video Analyzer for Reel URLs

If you have the URL of your reel and want to know what options are available, paste it into the Facebook Video Analyzer. The tool:

  • Identifies that the URL is a reel (/reel/ format or /reels/ alias)
  • Checks whether Facebook exposes a direct media URL (it typically does not for reels)
  • Shows the exact official steps to save it — the same steps as Method 1 above, contextually displayed for your specific URL type

This is helpful if you received a share link and aren't sure which method to use.

Why You Can't Save Other People's Reels

Facebook intentionally does not provide a download option for reels posted by other accounts. The platform does not expose direct video file URLs for reels in page source, which means third-party scrapers also cannot reliably extract them.

If you want to save a reel posted by a friend or creator and they're willing to share it with you, ask them to use Method 1 (app save) and send you the file directly.
